Taranaki Falls Walk: Tongariro National Park
The Taranaki Falls Track
Distance: 6km / 3.8 miles
Time: 2 hours return (loop)
Taranaki Falls Track is a 6km (3.8miles) loop, taking in some amazing sights along the way! There are two sections to the track, the upper and lower. It’s recommended that you begin your walk from the upper track, which begins just up the road beyond the sign for the lower track – the carpark is also located here. The two tracks form a loop, so you will begin and end in the same location and you will find Taranaki Falls at about the halfway mark.
While it’s considered an easy walk (compared with the likes of the Tongariro Crossing) there are still a few steep sections and a basic level of fitness is required. You will also need to make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes and appropriate gear for the changeable weather – which be warned can change from freezing to hot, before pouring rain all in a 20 minute period. Hot tip – don’t forget your rain jacket, even on a sunny day!
Along the way you will see some amazing sights, going from tussock and alpine shrublands, into peaceful forests (bird spotters keep an eye out), before eventually finding yourself crossing old lava flows, where it feels like you are traversing another planet entirely!
When the Tarankai Falls come into view, you’ll be blown away! Seeing this beautiful waterfall is definitely worth the hike. At the bottom of the falls you can make your way slightly off the main path to the edge of the pool and enjoy views of the waterfall from below!
After the falls the walk back is fairly easy and scenic! You will discover there are a few steep sections close to the finish line, so make sure you conserve some energy before you get there!
Sights to look out for along the way
Waterfalls – This may sound a little obvious, but there’s more than one waterfall to discover on this hike! Keep your eyes peeled as you walk to spot the many different waterfalls along the way.
Lava Fields – Look out for signs of an ancient lava flow! The area you are walking through was created when Ruapehu erupted 15,000 years ago. Pretty cool!
Mountain Views – On a clear day you will get amazing views of Mount Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe.
Most Scenic Toilet Spot – At about the mid-way point (just before Taranaki Falls, if you are starting from the upper track), you will come across a toilet with one of the best views you’ll ever find for a toilet! Spot the toilet in the image below…
Tama Lakes Track – If you want to extend you walk, this track also joins up with the Tama Lakes Track. You will find the start of this track very close to Taranaki Falls, it’s well sign-posted so you shouldn’t miss it. The entire walk will take you around 5-6 hours return and is 17km in distance (so quite a bit longer than the Taranaki Falls walking track!)
What to pack: Gear you will need
While the Taranaki Falls walk is on the easier side, you still need to ensure you set off with the correct gear so you can have a safe and enjoyable adventure!

It was such a stunning hike! These photos were actually taken at the start of winter here in NZ, but the landscape does look very autumnal! It’s my favourite season too x
