We’ve got a bit of a different coffee adventure for you today! This past weekend I boarded a train and headed out to Cambridge, England! I had a lovely day wandering about this beautiful town and the surrounding countryside, but there will be more on that later. Right now it’s all about the coffee, or shall I say tea in this case.
I was pre-informed that the best cafe in Cambridge was a place called Fitzbellies so I knew that was on my agenda for the day. I arrived in Cambridge bright and early so that I could take full advantage of my day. I initially had plans to grab a coffee and pastry from the local farmers market but early-riser me was a bit too early as most stall holders were still setting up! I figured that was a better time than ever to track down Fitzbellies so off I headed and it wasn’t long because I stumbled across their beautiful shop front and window display.
Fitzbellies has two sections, the ‘cafe’ which is waitered table service and the coffee house, which is what I would typically call a cafe. I, of course, decided to sit in the coffee house. The interior is simple but very well done, I was expecting something a bit more ‘fuddy duddy’ but was pleasantly surprised! All my favourite design features make an appearance and it felt like somewhere I could spend a few hours, which is a always a sign of a good cafe for me.
I’m not sure if the idea of being in a very English town took over because somehow I found myself ordering tea and a scone, coffee is my thing so I even shocked myself on this one! I took my seat in a lovely little sunny corner and was promptly served my little morning tea feast. I’ve always like a good scone but I recently discovered clotted cream, something we don’t seem to have in New Zealand and let’s just say my world has changed, for the better. I’ll admit the scone was slightly crumbly but the tea was good (not too hard to get wrong though) and I really enjoyed my morning stop here, it set me in good stead for the rest of the day!
Apparently Fitzbellies are most famous for their Cinnamon buns, so maybe next time I should give those a try, along with some coffee. They use coffee roasted by Climpson and co (Based in East London) so I do have high hopes it would be good.
There most certainly will be another visit to the beauty that is Cambridge! Be sure to keep an eye as I will have a full post all about my day soon.
You will find Fitzbillies at: 51 – 52 Trumpington St, Cambridge CB2 1RG
