As I am sure we are all aware by now I am a lover of coffee… Good coffee! But when I first made this move from New Zealand, the land of great coffee, I was warned by many who had made the journey before me that I would be hard by to find myself a good coffee in this town.
Well here it is, I’m just going to put it right out there… They were all wrong. Yes that’s right I came, explored and conquered that bad coffee rumour. Through my dedication to coffee, some good research and plenty of adventures with my fellow coffee loving pal, Jen, I have already found so many wonderful cafe’s that make a damn good coffee!
So I decided it was now up to me to inform other coffee loving folk out there where in London they might come across a decent cup of jo, we can’t have bad coffee bringing down this town’s reputation. So I present to you The London Coffee Series, each weekend I will bring to you a fantastic coffee spot for you to visit, enjoy and hopefully bring some happiness to those suffering with constant bad coffee nightmares.
It just so happens that I am sitting in a new discovery at this very moment. It is Saturday morning and I decided to head out with my laptop in hand to ‘Browns of Brockley’, a South London cafe that whips up a brilliant latte! I also treated myself to a jam doughnut muffin, which also happened to be a rather delicious creation.
For me though it’s not only about the coffee, I’m also very big on the visual aspect of a cafe and the ‘vibe’ (I’m not a fan of this word but I couldn’t think of anything else), nothing beats hanging out in a well designed cafe that makes your heart happy while enjoying a well made coffee that makes your tastebuds happy.
You will find Browns of Brockley tucked away down a quiet street that doesn’t quite look like it would hold anything worth venturing down it for. It’s a small space but they have worked wonders to make it feel open and spacious. The front is lined with big, beautiful windows letting in the glorious sunshine that all Londoners crave. One window is lined with delicious treats to tempt you as you enter and the friendly staff greet you with a smile as you step inside. The interior is minimal and decorate perfectly to my taste, white walls with pops of colour here and there using quirky prints and fresh flowers in glass jars. The shared tables hold people from all walks of life, creative types on laptops and writing in journals, couples out to enjoy their weekend coffee, small groups of friends catching up over a flat white or latte and young families loading their kiddies up on sweet treats.
It was obviously a popular place with a constant flow of people coming in and out while I was there but I noticed there always seemed to be a seat free when people wanted to sit in. It also never felt over crowded despite being a small space, the way it has been designed allows for it to feel open and intimate all at the same time.
I am really impressed with this place, it’s a wee bit out of the way but I know I will definitely be back and may even make it a regular weekend spot of mine. I have heard there is a fantastic Saturday farmers market nearby so next time I head there I will be hitting that up as well! What more could you want for a Saturday morning.
